The cannabis plant has been used medicinally and for recreation for years with astounding results. Plant medicine has taken off in popularity as the wealth of knowledge around cannabis has spread. As researchers have discovered ingenuity in cultivation techniques to enhance the effects and flavors of marijuana, users have been gravitating toward cannabis concentrates in recent years. As opposed to raw flower, THC and CBD oil concentrate provides a multitude of textures for new ways to consume products. Speaking of textures, cultivators have derived over the years several forms of concentrated cannabis:

  • Shatter
  • Hash Rosin
  • Live or Cured Resin
  • Badder
  • Distillates
  • Caviar
  • Etc…

…and these are just the most produced!

Solvent-Based and Solvent-less

Cannabis Concentrates with Sinsemilla

To understand the difference between the many forms of cannabis concentrates, we must remember the method in which they were produced. In this section we will cover the concentrates that use a solvent during extraction. For comparison in the average American’s mind, Vanilla extract uses alcohol as a solvent to take the best parts of the vanilla bean plant and transform them into a liquid. No matter the steps taken, cannabis concentrates are made by extracting the oils found in trichomes, THC, terpenes and other cannabinoids hile in plant form. Solvent-based extraction methods work by dissolving the trichomes of the plant using chemicals like butane, CO2, or ethanol. The final stage is then heated to evaporate any remaining solvent leaving behind the pure hash oil. Solvent-less methods use primarily heat to separate the trichomes from the excess plant material, leaving just concentrated cannabis.

What are Dabs?

There are many different classifications of concentrates that all fit under the umbrella of the term “dab.” Typically, smoking a dab requires some sort of rig to heat the oil enough for inhalation. Some common types of dabs found at your local dispensary include shatter, a translucent amber sheet of hardened oil, badder/budder, a whipped consistency similar to cake batter, and crumble, a dried and honeycomb like rock. Take a moment to check out what Sinsemilla has to offer in the dab department!

Is Flower or Concentrates Healthier?

As far as deciding which option is healthier between dabs and flower is something we’ll leave to you. Most arguments going, either way, are generally fueled by myths and stoner speculation. Objectively, the 2 have their pros and cons all completely depending on cultivation efforts and regulation. Marijuana concentrates are produced to contain above-average levels of THC. Solvent-based products show a higher content, with THC levels averaging 54-69% and reported to exceed 80%, while solvent-less-based extraction methods test on average between 39-60%. Moving on to flower, the THC found in raw cannabis plant material, is showing a median of just over 15%. The debate thickens when you start speaking about the inhalation rate of dab smokers vs traditional bud. Dab smoke enables you to consume an entire blunts worth of THC content in one hit. With this sped-up delivery, users have shown an increase in physical symptom relief and psychosis more often than a bong hit.

“It Takes all Kinds of Kinds”

Whether you’re a heavy bud smoker already or a ‘dab will do ya’ type, Sinemilla is happy to have you. We’re all going for the same goal and cannabis users are great at hyping each other up! Educating ourselves on all aspects of what such a remarkable plant can do for us is a favorite pastime. From shatter to a joint, RSO to a bong rip, the gift that comes from consuming marijuana can’t be topped no matter how it’s wrapped.
